  • Let the Snowball Fight Begin!

I've been employed for 4 months now and after taking care of a few things with the house, I am excited to finally be getting started on our debt...in the form of a debt snowball.

Not gonna get too much into our business here, but in hopes to encourage others, here's our plan. Our debt is in the form of four credit cards. This month, I'll start with the card with the smallest minimum payment. We'll pay minimums to all four cards, but the card with the smallest minimum payment gets the extra which comes from my paycheck. We'll keep paying the same amount of extra to this card until it's paid off...which should take maybe until summer. Then we'll continue to pay minimums to three cards (instead of four), but the card with the next smallest minimum payment will then get all the extra (which includes the paid off card's minimum payment amount). After card #2 is paid off (maybe early 2011?), we'll roll all of that into paying the third card off. Eventually, we'll be paying all the old minimums and the extra to card #4. They call it a debt snowball because as you pay off each card, the amount of extra you have to pay on the next card gets bigger and bigger.  Does that make sense?

The cool part of doing this snowball thing is that you don't have to have a lot of extra money to get the snowball started. $50 extra bucks each month starts the ball rolling. And many people can find that easily by just making a commitment to eat out less and use coupons more.

We opened up a 2nd checking account to keep my paycheck separate from the regular household account. This structure protects our debt snowball. This way if there are some months when we might feel weak and want to waste the extra, we'll remember that this is the debt reduction account and we really don't want to goof off with that.

Our motivation? Personally, I wanna be debt-free because I hate the weight of owing money to people.  I want the freedom to do with my money what I want. One thing, in particular, that we want to do with our money when we are debt-free is take the kids to Disneyworld. Thinking about this trip is pretty exciting for all of us! I'm hoping for a Disney Land and Sea vacation.  (Park for 3 days/Cruise for 4) It's not a "someday" thing for us anymore. It's gonna happen in a few years when WE'RE DEBT-FREE!!!!!!!

So...let's here it for being debt-free!
Hooray for my job that I love and allows me to help the family debt!
    Hooray for the debt snowball!
(And hooray for the snow that fell from the sky today!)

  • Well, it's about time!

I had a few minutes, so I thought I'd use them to quickly update my blog.

Since starting my job at Trinity, things have been very busy for our family. It seems like all we do is work/school...come home fix dinner, eat, clean up from dinner, fold laundry and head to bed again to do it all again the next day. Just not much margin in my life right now, so I'll take a bit of time to update on life in general...and maybe I'll get back to blogging more regularly, but in this stage of life, I can't promise you anything.

I still enjoy my job. I really like the people I work with and the families that we serve. It feels very much like a ministry to me. I'm living right in my purpose of valuing people with this job and I like it. I know these parents are counting on me to take care of their babies like they would...and to encourage them to grow and learn new things and I take this job very seriously. I also enjoy connecting with parents at drop off and pick up. I really want them to know that we are on the same team.

Stuff at church is going well. Club W(K-5th grade ministry) is running well. I've got a great team of volunteers to serve with me each Sunday and they really make things happen. I couldn't be prouder of my team. The Club W kids are sponsoring a child in Uganda which is pretty cool. We love teaching the kids about the value of others all over the world. Allen's been working hard to better systems and processes in the children's ministry as well as in other areas of the church. It's great to see him living in his purpose, too.

The kids are doing really well. Everybody's in ESTEM now and that's made life much easier. I feel better as a mom having all my kids in the same place...not more than 15 blocks away from where I work. If they need me, I can be there quickly. Susannah's in first grade. Alex is in third grade. Emmaleigh's in sixth grade. They all seem to be doing well at school. Emmaleigh even got a higher grade in math than in English this quarter! This is the girl who used to tell me how much she hated math. She's got a great teacher this year, though.

The kids are involved in several activities. Alex is doing Upward Basketball and Cub Scouts. The girls are involved in gymnastics. We've simplified our lives quite a bit having the girls at the same school and in gymnastics at the same time. Now we're only busy 2 nights a week...instead of 4. Whew!

On December 5th, we added a new dog to our household. Her name is Charlotte and she's a 3 year old Aussie Shepherd. Charlotte was rescued from the pound. Her brother was put to sleep, but they said that when they were walking her to the room for her euthanization, the dr. said to put her back. She needed another chance at life. So she was rescued and six months later, we found her online and adopted her. We love her very much already...even Susannah who had been afraid of bigger dogs. She seems like a beast compared to Lenny, but we're told she weighs 50 lbs. She's a super sweet dog and very smart...eager to learn. We'd like to get her into some obedience/agility classes this spring and see what she can really do.

Well, I think that's about it for now. It was good talking to you all.
    Hope to talk again soon.

  • Over a month?

I am shocked that I haven't posted on xanga in over a month.

    Where has the time gone?

Really, it's just flown by since I've started working at the Early Childhood Education Program (ECEP) at Trinitiy Cathedral.

I still enjoy working with the babies...and my coworkers are great too. I think we learn a lot from each other. If one of us can't get a kid to sleep, the other one will find a way to get it done. Teamwork is a great thing.

Tomorrow morning, I take Susannah to the endocrinologist at Arkansas Children's Hospital. Our PCP wants her to see someone to make sure she's ok size-wise. At her well check this summer, she'd dipped down below 10%...where she'd been hovering for a while. She's probably fine but our PCP is careful and I like that about him.

Alex turns nine officially on November 9...which is tomorrow. We had a little dinner and birthday cake for him this weekend. Tomorrow he goes to birthday lunch with Dad. I'm so proud of him and who God is making him to be. He's thoughtful and generous. He's becoming a leader which is super exciting to us, too.

Right now, he's into skateboards, RC cars, dirt bikes and scooters...pretty much anything on wheels and money. Yes, the boy loves money. I saw his money spread out all over his nightstand and a note which read "Alex's money: 29.04." He doesn't want to forget how much he has.

    So funny.
And now it's time to head to bed.

  • updating several things...

Alex started running a fever on Sunday night...also threw up a few times.
We didn't take him to the dr. Didn't want him sicker than he already was.
When you and your spouse both work, how do you figure out who takes time off?
I told Allen that I get paid by the hour and he gets paid whether he's in the office or not, so he should stay home with him. He did for day 1, but couldn't miss core hours today in the office, so I worked a 1/2 day and came home in time for him to do that. Alex hasn't had a fever since this morning, so I'm hoping this will all be over soon.

Susannah's been complaining about a headache and tummy ache for the past couple of days. Hasn't thrown up...or felt warm really, but I took her temp tonight just to be sure. It was 99. something. Not enough to really worry about but I'm not sure what to do with it along with the other symptoms. She's been at school all week...if her temp isn't any higher than that, I'll probably send her to school tomorrow, too.

I am pretty amazed and very thankful that this stuff hasn't caught the rest of us yet. I mean, I had a cold last week, but it wasn't like what Alex is dealing with. I have had some interesting headaches...that feel like an awful cold is coming on, but after ibuprofen, things are better, so I don't know what to do with that except thank God for my health. It's just not a good time to be sick...starting a new job and all.

The job is going well. I like the people I work with and I like the babies, too. I need to remember to listen well and speak little when it comes to my opinions on other people's lives. I bit my tongue today over a couple of things I heard and God graciously allowed me to leave it alone.

We only had 3 kids in our class today. One of our seven was at grandma's...and at least 2 were out sick. The other, I'm not sure about, but I know he had the beginning of a cold yesterday. We've enjoyed a couple of easy days, but I really do like my job...even when they're all there! It's still a great job for our family.

I got my first paycheck on Friday. It was one full week's pay. Got me excited for that snowball to start rolling! And we found out that it will be rolling even faster than we'd thought because Emmaleigh got into Estem after only 2 weeks at Southwest Christian! She'll start after fall break on 10/5. Two down, one more to go. Keep praying for Susannah to get in...

    That's all for now...

  • The Job

I finished day two of my new job, so I thought I'd give a little update.

It's really going pretty well. I spend a lot of time playing with babies, feeding babies and cleaning up after babies. I also do a lot of hand washing (for me and the babies) and back patting and crib rocking. The best part is that I don't do any of this alone. There are two other teachers who work with me...and we have 7 babies enrolled in our room right now, so it's really not been too stressful.

The director and her assistant told me that they are happy to have me there. So that feels great. And I can really just leave at 4:30 and not have to bring any work home with me. and I LOVE that. It's really pretty perfect...if I have to have a job, this is a great one to have. It fits my life right now very well.

In working with other women, you know there's mess to deal with. I've never been one to get in the middle of mess. I might listen, but I don't participate in spreading things around. I heard some mess today, but I was thankful that it wasn't any more than usual mess...

Anyway, that's all I'll say for now...
